COLLINGWOOD forward Corey Gault has retired from AFL football to return home to his original WAFL club Swan Districts. 

The 24-year-old big man played six AFL games for the Magpies in five years, the last three of which were spent on the club's rookie list. 

Before announcing his retirement on Friday, the No.65 pick in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft had been expected to be delisted.

Gault, who made his AFL debut in 2014, enjoyed a particularly strong 2016 NAB Challenge, tallying eight goals in three games, but was dropped and never returned after underwhelming performances in the opening two rounds. 

The West Australian's injury-plagued career culminated in a six-week absence due to concussion early this season.

"Corey is an upstanding young man who persisted through injuries and setbacks to earn his opportunities at senior level," Collingwood list manager Derek Hine said. 

"We are understanding of his decision to return home to family and friends, and wish him all the best in his future endeavours."


Gault has joined former Fremantle player Clancee Pearce at Swan Districts, the WAFL's wooden spooners.
