FROM one Irish Magpie to another.
Gaelic footballer Sarah Rowe has signed as a rookie with Collingwood for the 2019 NAB AFL Women’s season. Rowe received advice from former Magpies midfielder and countryman Marty Clarke before making a final decision to join the club.
Rowe visited all six Victorian clubs in April – Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, Melbourne, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs – before settling on the Magpies.
The multi-talented 23-year-old has also represented Ireland in soccer as a midfielder, while she plays as a forward for Mayo alongside Greater Western Sydney forward Cora Staunton in Gaelic football.
"Marty Clarke, once he heard I was going over, got in contact with me," Rowe told Midwest Radio, an Irish station based in County Mayo.
"He was all praise about Collingwood and it was nice to have an Irish opinion about the whole thing because when you're going over there, people are going to tell you all the good things and it was good to have him in the background.
"He was able to tell me a lot about the club and the managers (coaches) and his captain from when he was there, Nick Maxwell. He said he's the best captain he's ever played under, and a guy who I got a really good feel from really quickly (Maxwell is now the leadership and culture manager at the club),” she said.
"The coach of Collingwood (Wayne Siekman) taught me how to kick a ball and it came to me quite quickly. He was very good with the way he coached me, and he was very technical, and I responded well to his coaching style.
"I met a lot of the girls from the team as well. I had good craic (fun) with the girls, got on well with them, and I just thought, 'Gee, I think this is the club'."
Rowe is the third Irishwoman to be signed to an AFLW list, after Staunton and former Melbourne defender Laura Duryea, who played locally in Melbourne before being drafted.
AFLW clubs can sign three rookies who must not have played football in the three years before May 1 or have been involved in an AFLW high-performance program.
There is no rookie draft this year, with clubs having until September 28 to sign rookies.
