STAR Darebin recruit Angelica Gogos has surged into the lead of the VFLW Coaches Player of the Year Award after another dominant performance in the Falcons' resurgent start to the season.

Gogos, 32, who played for the VU Western Spurs and then the Western Bulldogs before joining the Falcons this year, polled nine votes in her team’s record-setting eight-point win over Carlton at Ikon Park on Saturday, the second time this season she has been best-on-ground and the fourth time in five weeks she has attracted the coaches’ attention, to move to 27 and take a two-vote lead over one of last week’s leaders in Essendon revelation Amelia Radford.

First-year player Radford, 26, picked up another four votes in the Bombers’ draw with Southern Saints to move to 25, the fourth week in a row she has polled, while Hawthorn rookie Aimee Whelan continued to impress with another five votes to move to third spot on 23.

Last week’s other two leaders – Casey’s Tahlia Fellows and Geelong’s Paige Sheppard – failed to poll and make up the top five on 21.

North Melbourne gun Jess Duffin was the only player to pick up a full 10 votes in Round 5, taking her to 19 votes in just two games and a share of seventh spot, just behind Southern Saint Hannah Stuart, who picked up nine votes to move into sixth on 20, and equal with Collingwood captain Caitlin Bunker (five).

Jenna Richardson (Hawthorn, 7), Danielle Marshall (Essendon, 7), Jasmine Kawa (Williamstown, 7) and Matilda Zander (Collingwood, 6) were others to poll strongly in Round 5.

Similar to the AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year, the VFLW award is voted on by the coaches of each club after every game in both competitions.

The coaches are awarding 5-4-3-2-1 to their best players in the game from either team, with those votes collated and revealed each week on vfl.com.au.

Another 15 players attracted the coaches’ attention for the first time in Round 4, making it 123 who have polled votes across the first four rounds.
