THE Smithy’s VFL season finally kicks off on Friday afternoon, with 21 clubs playing 18 games each across 22 rounds.
And there’s plenty to get excited about with as many as five or six premiership contenders and at least 16 a big chance to taste finals action.
As with every year, there has been a huge turnover of players, and the likely continued impact of Covid means it is hard to predict just how everyone will go, but Werribee is looking in a strong position to push for an end to its 29-year premiership drought, although last year’s unbeaten minor premier Footscray, Box Hill Hawks, Casey Demons and even Southport will have a lot to say about that.

Summary: The Hawks just go about their business with little fanfare, and you can be surprised when you look at the ladder and see them at the pointy end. They won their last seven games last year by big margins and can again be expected to challenge. Ex-AFL players Cavarra, Parsons and Grey will be massive while it will be great to see Jaylon Thorpe re-establish himself at the level. Cousins, Hanrahan, Kilpatrick and Deluca (although he didn’t play much last year) will be missed, but it is hard to see Box Hill not being there at the business end.

Summary: Entering the second year of a complete reset at State league level, the Lions can expect to be more competitive. Copped some nasty hidings last year as they got games into their youngsters, which will only benefit them this season. A win and a close loss against Southport – which handed them two of those hidings in 2021, bodes well for an improved showing, while Buzza and Cox will bring plenty to the table and Lions fans will be salivating at the prospect of seeing boom father-sons Ashcroft and Fletcher later in the year when their underage commitments come to a close. The exits of best-and-fairest winner Ballenden and ruckman Archie Smith leave big holes.

Summary: The Blues look like being in a similar position to last year – good enough to beat just about anyone, but capable of losing them all too. Ben Crocker is all class, while Hayes will play his 100th VFL game early in the season and is a huge signing. The returning Glass-McCasker will be important, as will fellow recruit Cahill, while Toby Wooller and Cody Hirst are keys and the development of Stefan Radovanovic, Cooper Stephens and Patrick Cripps’ brother Josh will be worth following. How they replace Parsons and Stoddart will go a long way to determining their fate.

Summary: One of the teams right in the premiership window, especially if Melbourne remains healthy. Buntine, Conca and Lonie are terrific inclusions, Dunstan gives the AFL midfield even more depth that will improve the VFL equivalent, and being able to call on Zaharakis, Moore and Reid will also be a luxury. They’ve farewelled heart-and-soul ex-skipper Hutchins, plus quality in Lewis, Lockhart and Foot, while McCaffrey, Stockdale, Machaya and Briggs will also be missed. With captain Mitch White, who is within reach of 100 games, Jimmy Munro and Majak Daw still around and Corey Ellison improving all time, they will take a lot of pulling up.

Mullenger-McHugh will also be missed, but the return of Adam Swierzbiolek from injury gives them the genuine ruckman they need, skipper Peter McEvoy continues to inspire and backmen Jack Maibaum and Harry Nolan will again be hard to get past. McLarty provides a target up forward. Natural progression has them right in contention to break a long finals drought, but they will have to make it happen themselves.

Summary: The Magpies are as excited about their prospects as anyone in the competition as their young group continues to develop together. Daicos is unlikely to be seen at VFL level given how good his AFL debut was last week, but fellow recruits Dean and Kreuger (if they can’t break in), Jetta and Eggmolesse-Smith will be terrific inclusions. Sier was a mainstay and will be missed, while Stackelberg did well in defence last year. It will be interesting to see how suburban goalkicking gun Wetering handles the step up – he’ll get plenty of good supply.

Then there is the great Ben Jolley, who will finish his career where he started, hopefully by playing the 13 games he needs to become likely the last man to reach 300 VFL matches, and then the extra three to become the grand old league’s games record holder. He is the big watch at Windy Hill.

Summary: How do you go better than an unbeaten season? That is the challenge for the Bulldogs, and they will be hunted fiercely. They’ve lost experience in Cavarra, Hayes and William, and will be relying on skipper Lachie Sullivan, best-and-fairest Robbie McComb and the experienced Mitch Wallis continuing to lead from the front, although the latter two will be hoping to break into the powerful AFL team. There is also huge upside in Bailey van de Heuvel, Cody Raak and Riley Garcia. They will still take a power of stopping.

Summary: Made huge strides last year, but they have lost some big names from that team who will be hard to replace. None bigger than Freeman (how do you cover 37 disposals per game?) and new Brisbane Lions Mitch Cox, while Brolic, Mentha, Berry, Loughnan, Young, Styles, Crocker and Krakauer were all senior regulars last year. Former AFL-listers Duman, Stoddart, Murphy, Walker and Bradtke will be terrific inclusions, while a fit Will Fordham will be a bonus after he missed half of last year. Depth will appear to be their greatest problem, but they are developing a good home ground advantage and should continue to improve.

Untried big man Courtney and youngster Liam Podhajski should take pressure off talisman Danny Hughes, while Dunkley fills the hole left by Ahern. A lot of experience and leadership has gone with Strachan, but Tom Wilson is an inspirational captain and there will be improvement in Will Mitchell, Jack Boyd, Mutaz El Nour and Billy Murphy. Liam Mackie is suspended for a third of the season from a pre-season incident and that will hurt, but the Bullant spirit will sting unwary rivals.

Summary: Everything that could go wrong in 2021 went wrong, so surely the Borough is due a change in fortunes. Hunter’s arrival gives them a huge presence in the centre circle and a great mentor for Hotchkin, who was one of last year’s shining lights. Lentini’s arrival will also improve their centre clearance rate out of sight while Lewis brings experience. On the other foot, Jansen and Jolley will be sorely missed, and while injury meant they didn’t see the best of Kerr and Watson, their departures leave holes. I suspect new coach Skrobalak is playing the long game, but underestimate this club at your peril.

Summary: The drop off in 2021 was alarming – at both levels – but improvement can be expected – at both levels. Having said that, losing a quality organiser like Garthwaite will take replacing, while Naish, Coleman-Jones and Eggmolesse-Smith were key part of this team last year. The strong AFL draft hand of five picks in the top 30 means plenty of young quality filters into the VFL, and it will be how quickly they find their feet that will determine how far the black sash can go. Expect there will be wild fluctuations, as shown in the pre-season when they thrashed Casey but got belted by Carlton in the space of a week.

Summary: Made everyone sit up and take notice with their performances last year, and this year’s squad is stronger. The question mark is over the fact they didn’t get to play a team that finished higher than eighth last season – and it is a question they are asking themselves. We’ll know a lot more by Round 8, but expect them near the pointy end.

While they need to cover No.1 defender Brand and midfield ball magnet Gray, the depth appears better and the on-ball division (Sinclair, Taylor, Shipley and draftees Corey Warner and Roberts) looks healthy, as does a defensive unit full of AFL capabilities. The forward line might be a bit light on, but time will tell.

Summary: I tipped the Tigers to make the Grand Final last year and they were building nicely after a slow start when the season was abandoned. And they look even stronger this year. Losing Lobbe and Buzza stings but Conway and Driscoll are young ruckmen with big wraps and Garoni’s natural development plus the return of Porter should cover the big Queenslander. There is plenty of VFL quality in Hanrahan, William, McCaffrey and Ham, plus Declase will be better for his six months in the Melbourne system. And keep an eye on mature-aged midfielder Brennan – he can play and adapts very quickly to jumps in standard. Get excited, Werribee fans.

There was for Port Melbourne last year when injuries hit, but as long as this squad still has the likes of Mitch Hibberd, Jake Greiser and Nick Mellington, plus ex-AFL players Gallucci, Downie, new skipper Polson, Miles, Macreadie, Gown and Hawks recruit Cousins, and talent such as Hunt, Toner, Rich, Monk and Myers they will still be hard to beat, especially at home.
