MELBOURNE has re-signed free agent Jack Watts for three years, tying him to the club until the end of 2019.

Watts is putting together the best season of his career having played every game and kicked 31 goals.

Not only has he played as mobile forward alongside emerging star Jesse Hogan, he has excelled when placed in the midfield or up the ground.

Watts has been one of the game's most heavily scrutinised players since being selected with pick No.1 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

But the 25-year-old had four senior coaches in his first 73 games before gaining some consistency under Paul Roos, who has now coached Watts in the past 58 games.

Watts told melbournefc.com.au he always hoped to stick with the Demons beyond this season.

"I've never had too many doubts about staying here at Melbourne to be honest," Watts said.

"When you form such close bonds with everyone here – your teammates, coaching staff and the supporters, who have been with me through everything for the last seven or eight years – it hasn't been a smooth ride, that's for sure.

"To have people stick by you and support you all the way, you really want to repay that and I think I’ve taken steps towards that this year.

"I'm really looking forward to working hard over the next three years to get the best out of myself and the team."

Watts has now kicked 114 goals from his 131 games and promises to be a key part of the emerging Demons as they aims to reach finals for the first time since 2006.

Watts said Roos had made a huge contribution and he looked forward to working alongside new coach Simon Goodwin.

"The way they teach the game is second to none and we’ve got such a young team that we’re playing at the moment, but we’re able to compete because we’re getting taught better than anyone else," Watts said.
