THE RETIREMENT of Carlton midfielder Chris Judd has been compounded by the loss of ruckman Robbie Warnock for the season due to a shoulder injury.

Warnock partially dislocated his shoulder on multiple occasions against Geelong in round eight but the club had hoped he'd be able to avoid surgery.

But the shoulder would not respond to natural rehabilitation and he will have surgery this week.

"He obviously subluxed it a few times in the Geelong game and he'd been trying to rehab that the last couple of weeks without much success," Carlton head of football Andrew McKay told the club's website.

"(It is) unable to function at the level required, certainly to play senior footy, so we think the best course of action is to go and get that surgically repaired.

"That means Rob's out for the rest of the season unfortunately."

The 28-year-old has only played two games this season after battling shoulder issues earlier in the year.

He has only played more than 20 games in a season once throughout his eight-year career that began at Fremantle in 2007.
