GOLD Coast will be barracking for West Coast to drop down the ladder this year, with the Suns holding the Eagles' first-round draft pick among a swag of early selections.
The Suns acquired the Eagles' pick in a swap of selections during last year's NAB AFL Trade Period, and the move has positioned Gold Coast to have the strongest hand at this year's NAB AFL Draft with four picks in the first two rounds.
They kept their own first-round pick, and also brought in second-round selections from Essendon and Geelong. However, they did trade out their own second-round pick to the Eagles.
The introduction of trading future picks in 2015 means club recruiting teams now take even more interest in the fortunes of rivals throughout the season, as their own draft standing could be impacted.
Last year St Kilda closely followed the form of Hawthorn, having gained the Hawks' first-round pick the previous off-season.
The Saints used the choice (which finished as No.7 overall) to select tough and classy midfielder Hunter Clark at November's national draft.
This year 14 clubs will have picks in the draft that are tied to the finishing positions of rivals, including Adelaide, who hold four future picks.
The Crows picked up Melbourne's first- and fourth-round picks in the Jake Lever trade, and were able to secure Carlton's second- and third-round selections as part of the Bryce Gibbs mega deal.
The Suns and Crows are the only clubs to hold first-rounders from rivals, but 11 second-round picks have changed hands for this year's draft.
If the Suns keep their first-round picks, it would mean they have had seven first-round picks in three years. They also traded in Lachie Weller last year from Fremantle, who had been a first-round pick for the Dockers in 2014.
Carlton and Geelong will be keeping a close eye on other clubs this year with both holding three future picks.
Greater Western Sydney will be hoping Fremantle and Essendon struggle this season to make the most of their on-traded selections, while Port Adelaide, who hold St Kilda's second-round pick and North's third-rounder, will be monitoring those clubs' campaigns.
