Campbell tweeted his displeasure after the game.
"Not good enough. Not even close. Fans deserve so much better. 41,000 came out today and we let you down," Campbell wrote.
The club retweeted the CEO's comment through its own official account, ensuring the Dons' 125,000 followers on the social media platform were aware of his disappointment.
The loss meant Essendon is 6-8 with its finals prospects looking slim - a fact acknowledged by downcoast coach John Worsfold after the game.
"At the moment you would say the only thing that's keeping us in the mix is the fact that no team's grabbing it and running away with it," Worsfold said.
"I would much rather be saying that we're in the mix for the finals because of the good footy we're playing.
"And from today I can't say that. Previously I would've said that but we've got to work out how we bounce back from this."
The Bombers face Collingwood at the MCG next Saturday afternoon.
