The new women’s competition will be known as AFL Women’s.
The AFL confirmed the name on Thursday as part of a joint promotion with social media platform Instagram.
AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said the name had been developed in consultation with past and present players and the league’s women’s football advisory group.
He said women playing the game were heavy users of social media, with the league, clubs and players expected to make extensive use of new platforms to promote and communicate about the competition.
The AFL is still to launch a logo for the AFL Women’s competition or name a major sponsor. The player draft will be held in Melbourne on October 12, with the fixture for the inaugural season likely to be released in late October.
