But all of the sudden his reign at the top is under threat with his teammates beginning to run him down.
The 19 year-old scorched the track to take out the club's first pre-season time-trial in October, but as the Kangaroos' prepare to battle the clock again on Thursday, some new threats have emerged.
Rookie Marcus White was the first to beat Bastinac during the camp in Utah but a thigh-strain restricted his output shortly after. If he can get back to full fitness, he'll be trying his best to repeat the feat.
Lachie Hansen and Brayden Norris were stand-out performers in Park City and had a mini-battle at the front of the pack with North Ballarat recruit Cameron Richardson also looming as a possible victor. Richardson’s natural aerobic ability has enabled him to impress despite being only a month into his first AFL pre-season.
However, kangaroos.com.au has just learned that Norris has been stuck down with a mystery illness and is under a cloud for tomorrow’s time-trials in Carlton.
Nathan Grima is also out of the equation with an injury to his lower back but Jamie Macmillan has improved markedly thanks to some guidance in the off-season from the club's strength and conditioning assistant Jona Segal.
Not one to go down without a fight, Levi Greenwood could also pose some stiff competition if the result goes down to the wire. It has been well documented that Greenwood struggled at altitude but now he’s back on a level playing field and will be hungry to prove he hasn’t lost his edge.
Daniel Wells could also be near the front as he enjoys his first full pre-season on the track in several years.
Or will there be a surprise packet? How will North's draftees perform in their first test?
