ESSENDON breakout forward Federica Frew is the 2022 Rohenna Young medallist, claiming a dominant eight-goal victory in the prestigious award after the home-and-away season drew to its exciting conclusion.
Frew went goalless in the Bombers’ narrow win over Casey Demons that completed an undefeated minor premiership (with two draws), but her lead was never going to be run down, with Hawthorn’s Jessie Williams also going goalless in her team’s win over Williamstown, being joined in the runner-up position by Geelong’s Mia Skinner.
Geelong recorded its 50th rebel VFLW victory in its win over Collingwood, one week later than first reported due to a clerical error, hitting the mark in its 77th game with one draw.
The rebel VFLW finals series kicks off on Saturday morning and promises to be one not to miss, starting with the 1v2 qualifying final between Essendon and Hawthorn at Windy Hill at 11.05am three weeks after they played a pulsating draw, to be followed by a curtain closer VFL clash between the Bombers and Carlton.
Geelong hosts Southern Saints in the 4v5 second elimination final at Deakin University at 1.05pm on Saturday, with the Cats keen to reverse a convincing loss to the Saints at the same venue in Round 4.
Then on Sunday, the main event is the 3v6 Casey Demons v Collingwood first elimination final at Casey Fields at 11.35am – a match that should be a ripper given they are 1-1 this year, the Demons having won by seven points at AIA Centre and the Magpies returning the favour by 10 points at their finals venue – with the traditional VFL Queen’s Birthday Sunday clash between the same clubs scheduled as the curtain closer.
