Melbourne delists rookie defender after seven games in 2014
MELBOURNE has delisted rookie defender Alex Georgiou after seven senior games in his first season at the club.
Georgiou was pick No.35 in the 2014 NAB AFL Rookie Draft, brought in to add depth to the Demons' backline in 2014.
With Colin Garland sidelined by injury in the early part of the year, Georgiou earned his opportunity at AFL level and filled in admirably against some dangerous forwards.
The 24-year-old made his debut in round one and held his spot until round seven, with his last appearance coming against Adelaide.
Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said Georgiou made the most of his chances at the elite level.
"[Alex] made personal and financial sacrifices, leaving a successful career and moving interstate," Mahoney told the club website.
"He leaves the club having played seven AFL games and knowing that he has made a lasting impression on players and coaches with his attitude."
The acquisition of young defender Sam Frost from Greater Western Sydney seemingly tipped the odds against Georgiou.
If he is not offered another chance at an AFL club, Georgiou will play for Norwood in the SANFL.
