Good judges tell you he should have won All-Australian under 18 honours, especially after his stellar performances for Victoria Country in the national carnival.
Those closest to him know his worth. Geelong assistant coach Ken Hinkley was coach at Bell Park when Sheringham won the under 13 best and fairest but failed to win a vote in the league.
He finished third in the Morrish Medal count this year but did not make the national draft camp, so he was not surprised when he was not drafted.
Geelong knew his attributes and invited him to train with them over the past three weeks. And it was Hinkley that let him know the Cats would be taking him in the rookie draft ifhe was not grabbed earlier.
Now Sheringham will have to put on hold his architecture studies as his focus on making it with the Cats becomes a priority.
His approach to being selected was typically understated and he sees his first year as one of development in the VFL.
"From what I've seen of them last season it's probably the best club to be at for a young player and I'm very happy to be here," he said.
"I have enjoyed the past few weeks training here and I’ll be a bit ahead of the other two because I've got to know everyone."
As a kid, he always supported the Cats and team posters of the 1992 and 1994 grand final sides had pride of place in his bedroom.
His hero was Garry Hocking.
