Glass has led the club since 2008 and is just 17 games shy of John Worsfold's club record of 138 matches as captain.

 

The three-time best and fairest and four-time All Australian will have two new vice-captains in 2014, with Scott Selwood and Josh Kennedy named as deputies.

 

Beau Waters took the magnanimous step of speaking to the playing group before they voted on the club's leaders on Wednesday afternoon. 

Waters informed his teammates that he wished to stand down as vice-captain in order to focus on his recover from shoulder surgery.

 

The club was keen to streamline the leadership group to five players after having 10 last season.

 

The five men voted by the players and subsequently ratified by the match committee and the board were Glass, Selwood, Kennedy, Dean Cox and Matt Priddis.

 

"It has always been an honour to be captain of the West Coast Eagles and it is something I cherish,” Glass said.

 

"Having said that, however, I have said in the last couple of years that if my teammates felt there was someone better to lead them, then I would step aside.

 

"I never take the position for granted and with my teammates deciding they wanted me to continue and subsequent endorsement from the match committee and board I am thrilled to captain the club again in 2014."

 

Chairman Alan Cransberg said the board did not hesitate in endorsing the players' verdict.

 

"Just as the players do, we believe Darren is an outstanding leader and has much to offer as captain," Cransberg said.

 

"Our club is fortunate to have someone of Darren’s calibre leading the playing group and we just as fortunate to have the quality of people around him who will form the leadership group for 2014.

 

"In Josh Kennedy and Scott Selwood we have some emerging leaders, while Dean Cox and Matt Priddis are also highly respected veterans with so much to offer.

 

"The board would also like to acknowledge the contribution of Beau Waters as vice-captain for the last three years. While he has stepped aside to focus on getting his body right, though is no reason why he cannot resume a leadership role in the future."
