POLICE are investigating allegations of racial abuse hurled at a Brisbane Lions trainer from a member of the crowd at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Amateur footage emerged on Sunday of a man allegedly directing racial slurs after the Lions' trainer incurred a 50m penalty by running through the mark during the third quarter of the Western Bulldogs-Brisbane Lions clash.

AFL spokesman Patrick Keane told AFL.com.au on Sunday afternoon that the incident was being probed by police.

"Police have advised us that they are investigating the matter after a complaint was made to them," Keane said.

"We would provide whatever assistance or information to assist their investigation that we're asked to, but obviously we would wait for them in that how they proceed will be a matter for police to determine.

"We would repeat again that such behaviour is never welcome or condoned at our matches."

This is the latest racial abuse scandal to rock the AFL after Adelaide small forward Eddie Betts was vilified by a Port Adelaide supporter during the Showdown at Adelaide Oval in round three.

Port Adelaide's Paddy Ryder was also vilified by a Crows fan.

The Betts incident prompted League chief executive Gillon McLachlan to swiftly condemn the behaviour.

"Racism is hurtful and damaging to individuals and communities, and when it happens in football, we must call it out," McLachlan said in the wake of the incident.

"Our game has a responsibility to our players, and a role to play in the community on issues of racism and vilification. Our players deserve respect, and we ask that people understand the impact of their comments on them, their families and our community."
