THE BRISBANE Lions are working with their trainer at the centre of a racial abuse case still being investigated by Victoria Police.

Footage emerged on Sunday of a man allegedly directing racial slurs towards the trainer after he conceded a 50m penalty for running through the mark during Saturday's match against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

The Lions told AFL.com.au they would assist Victoria Police in their investigations.

"Any form of racism is totally unacceptable and we are working with the trainer to ensure he has all the support he needs," a Lions spokesman said.

The Lions trainer is in his first year in the role for the club and did not hear the alleged slur at the time.

He became aware of the incident only once the video was shown to him.

The trainer was said to be "shattered" at the indiscretion that gifted Robert Murphy a crucial goal in his 300th game in the midst of a storming Bulldogs comeback.

Victoria Police said it: "takes all crime, particularly that's motivated by prejudice, seriously and is committed to investigating all incidents of racism or other prejudice that are reported to police".
