ESSENDON'S Michael Hurley is on track for a return from his ankle injury this week but the club will take a cautious approach with young star defender Jake Carlisle.

Hurley missed the Bombers' Anzac Day win over Collingwood having rolled his ankle against St Kilda in round four.

The 22-year-old took part in training on Monday and the club's football manager Danny Corcoran said Hurley was pushing to be picked for Saturday's meeting with Greater Western Sydney.

"He ran today so hopefully he'll get in a situation later in the week where he's a test. I think that may be the case so fingers crossed," Corcoran told AFL.com.au.

"He wanted to play last week. Obviously it's a match committee decision but if he passes his test and gets through training there'd be no reason to hold him back."

The prognosis is less clear on Carlisle, who injured his foot in the third quarter against the Magpies.

Carlisle reappeared in the fourth quarter but has had his foot in a moonboot over the weekend.

He had scans on the injury on Monday.

"We'll take every precaution with him and if he's not right I'd imagine the match committee and coaches wouldn't risk him, but we'll just see how the week unfolds," Corcoran said.

Veteran defender Dustin Fletcher has missed two games since straining his groin against Fremantle in round three, but participated at Monday's training session.

The club is expected to give the 37-year-old as much time as required to prevent any reoccurrence of the injury.

"He'll certainly push up and be tested," Corcoran said.

"Looking after him is really important. You don't want an injury that is going to haunt him for weeks and weeks, so getting it right the first time is really important.

"He was very confident this morning that he was very much on the mend."

The Bombers' depth has been central to their brilliant start to the season, and the club will have more selection issues this week with forward Nick Kommer available after serving his two-match suspension.
