The tradition of collecting AFL footy cards has been brought into the digital age following the release of the Select Official AFL Collector Cards app.
The latest official AFL footy cards have been released in time for the Opening Round of the 2014 Toyota AFL Premiership Season and for the first time ever fans are able to bring their Collector Cards to life via the latest mobile and tablet technology.
The AFL, the AFL Players Association and Select Australia - the AFL’s Official Collector Card licensee for over 20 years - has partnered with digital agency Isobar to develop the first ever trading card app.
The Select Official AFL Collector Cards app enables fans to use image recognition to scan physical cards into a digital album, create their own team out of their favourite cards and share their collection on social media. Users can currently expand their collection with virtual coins, awarded for each card they scan in, with a view to developing digital trading between users in the future.
Collectors also have the opportunity to collect digital cards featuring vision of the best marks and goals of 2013 along with extra features including the ‘Best and Fairest’ card that reveals a 3D animated model of individual players - built using motion capture technology - alongside video highlights and audio commentary.
AFL Licensing Manager, Jessica Hatz, said: “Collecting and trading footy cards is an iconic part of growing up for so many AFL fans. Giving supporters the opportunity to now bring the cards to life and take the experience into a digital format is an exciting development.”
Grant Copley, Managing Director of Select Australia said: “Select is extremely proud to offer its 2014 series of AFL collector cards and its first digital release. We hope collectors young and old will embrace this new innovation in the collector card industry.”
