FORMER North Melbourne defender Aaron Mullett is poised to join Carlton as a delisted free agent.

Mullett was delisted by North earlier this month after playing 85 games in his seven years at Arden St, including 18 in 2017.

The 25-year-old left-footer was among several experienced players being considered by Port Adelaide, but AFL.com.au understands he is set to sign with Carlton in the delisted free agency period, which opens on Wednesday.

The delisted free agents looking for a lifeline

Mullett's former teammate Lindsay Thomas remains on Port's radar, but the contracted North small forward is expected to get to Alberton via the rookie draft rather than as a delisted free agent.

Mullett averaged a career-best 20 possessions a game in 2017 and led North in rebound 50s (101) and was second for running bounces (14).

A penetrating kick and deadly shot for goal on the run, Mullett is a highly effective rebounding defender, but has been working on his contested play.

Selected at pick No.34 in the 2011 rookie draft, Mullett finished equal fourth in the NAB AFL Rising Star Award in 2013, a season in which he played every game and finished a career-best 10th in North's best and fairest award.
