The Long Walk is a charity inspired by Essendon Football Club legend Michael Long’s walk to Canberra to get the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people back on the national agenda. The charity raises awareness to improve and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, wellbeing and life opportunities. The Long Walk Trust is a separate legal entity to Essendon Football Club.
The General Manager – The Long Walk is the sole management position within the charity and reports to The Long Walk board and the Head of Community GM, Membership, Community & Fan Development at Essendon Football Club.
The Long Walk team is located within the Community department of the club’s structure.
The General Manager – The Long Walk is responsible for the development, oversight and delivery of The Long Walk Trust’s annual plan of programs, with a particular emphasis upon
10-year anniversary events. This initial, fixed-term contract to June 30 2014 will focus on a number of priority tasks.
You will be responsible for:
- Maintaining The Long Walk’s unique position as an Australian educational charity and a leader in raising awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wellbeing
- Preparing the FY2015 Annual plan for board approval – draft presented at May meeting for adoption at June meeting
- Preparing the FY2015 Budget for board approval – draft presented at May meeting for adoption at June meeting
- Managing staff contractual arrangements.
The successful candidate will have the following attributes:
- A demonstrated passion for delivering genuine outcomes for the community
- A minimum 5 years successful fundraising experience with corporate, philanthropic, government and individual donors
- Experience of reporting to a board of Directors
- A minimum of 3 years managing teams in a community development/ education/customer marketing/ event management role
- Experience in developing, managing and evaluating community programs and events
- Demonstrated networks in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities locally, nationally and specifically within the charitable, cultural, health and education sectors
