FORMER Brisbane Lions forward Josh Green is "busting" to get an opportunity at another club as a delisted free agent after being chopped from the Lions' list last week. 

The 24-year-old admitted he had an inconsistent 2016 after being the club's leading goalkicker the previous two seasons, but told SEN he was playing catch-up for most of the year after breaking his foot in January.

Green put negotiations for a new contract on hold mid-year as uncertainty surrounded the future direction of the club.

He then mutually agreed with the Lions to seek a fresh start during the end of season exchange period, but said he was surprised overall that his 2016 ended without a new contract.

He said there had been some interest in obtaining his services but he understood he faced a nervous wait to see whether he received a second chance.

Green, who kicked 107 goals in 81 games with the Lions, said being delisted had showed him how quickly an AFL career could change direction and he was ready to work hard to restart his football journey. 

"Being delisted shocked me in a way, [particularly] at an age where my best football is ahead of me, and if given a chance at a new club I'm going to give it everything I've got," Green said. 

"[I] need to work on my defensive side of things. That is what being that small forward requires and I will work as hard as I can." 

He said he hoped a new club would offer him that chance.

"I'm busting for an opportunity at another club," Green said.
