EMBARRASSED Greater Western Sydney midfielder Lachie Whitfield says the club is hurting from Saturday's loss to the Sydney Swans and needs to bounce back strongly against Carlton next week, even though finals now look out of reach in 2015.
The Giants were never in the contest against their cross-town rivals, eventually succumbing by 89 points in front of 19,507 fans, the most to ever attend a GWS fixture at Spotless Stadium.
The heavy defeat leaves the Giants with a 10-10 win-loss record heading into the remaining two rounds of the home-and-away season and the finals seemingly out of reach.
22 turned up and 22 thought it was too hard: Cameron
"To be honest it was a little bit embarrassing," Whitfield said after the match.
"Our heads are pretty low at the moment but there is another game next week, so we are going to get over this over the next few days, do our review and roll straight into next week.
"There is not much light at the end of the tunnel in terms of finals. We will just give it everything we've got for the next two games and hopefully get two wins."
Whitfield, who will play his 50th game next week, finished with 16 kicks and nine handballs in Saturday's match.
He said the Giants' midfield went into "self-survival mode" in the second half when the Swans onslaught was in full swing, something that was more common during the club's early years.
"We thought we had turned the page in the book but today was pretty abysmal. Obviously this showed some old habits coming back," Whitfield said.
"We just didn't talk in the midfield and our effort just wasn't there.
"We know with the players we've got and the effort that we bring to games that if we can put it all together it is a good brand of footy. But just couldn't put the pieces of the puzzle together today."
