Gray ruptured his ACL in 2012 and underwent a knee reconstruction, but since his return in 2013 has developed into one of the AFL's most exciting and explosive small forwards.
His agility – considering the serious knee injury – is extraordinary, as are his vision and skills.
An All Australian last year, Gray is not the fastest player at Port Adelaide but his knack of weaving through traffic at stoppages allows him to find plenty of space from which to either set up a teammate in a scoring position or kick a goal himself.
His one glaring weakness is his inconsistency. If he can perform at an even level as he gathers experience, he might emerge as one of the genuine stars of the competition.
Gray did not feature in last year's players' top 50, but his runaway best and fairest win (he beat his skipper Travis Boak by 143 votes), the 42 goals he booted and the 14 votes he received in the Brownlow Medal (second-best for the Power) obviously made an impact on his peers across the AFL.
He featured in every game last season (25), led all players in goal assists (33), averaged 25 disposals per game, finished third for the club in handballs, fourth in loose-ball gets and fifth in total kicks and handballs received.
Gray represented Australia in the International Rules Series against Ireland and was the AFL Coaches' Association player of the year.
Gray played for East Burwood in Melbourne's eastern suburbs and the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup competition. He turns 27 later this month and recently signed a contract extension until the end of the 2018 season.
