IT WON'T be ready in time to host the Ashes Test in December, but Perth Stadium is racing towards completion ahead of the 2018 AFL season.

The state-of-the-art venue is now more than 82 per cent complete, and a major milestone is expected within the next few months when turf is rolled out.

Works preparing the playing surface, including installing drainage and irrigation systems, are significantly advanced ahead of the turf rollout.

Meanwhile, giant 340-square metre video replay screens – the largest in the southern hemisphere – have been installed at the eastern and western ends, behind where the goal posts will stand.

The LED sports lighting system, encircling the arena and replacing traditional floodlights like those used at Domain Stadium, is also 99 per cent in place.

The lighting will illuminate the playing surface and will also create stunning visual effects for sporting events and concerts.

About a quarter of the roof lighting system, which will shine in Fremantle and West Coast's team colours on matchdays, has been installed.

Only about 7000 seats at the 60,000-capacity venue remain to be fitted.

Each seat will have a cupholder and general admission seats will be 50cm wide, twice the width of a Domain Stadium bench seat.

A workforce in excess of 1200 people are on site at Burswood, with the focus on fitting out the stadium's internal areas, including the premium product areas, and landscaping the surrounding Stadium Park.

Superstar musician Ed Sheeran has been revealed as one of the early events to be held at the venue when he kicks off the Australian and New Zealand legs of his world tour on March 3 next year.

The fifth One-Day International between Australia and England on January 28 could be shifted from the WACA if the stadium is ready. Perth Stadium's opening event is yet to be confirmed.

The WAFC, Fremantle and West Coast are still negotiating a deal to move football to the stadium from next season onwards, with new AFL Commission chairman Richard Goyder saying earlier this month he hoped an agreement would be struck in the "near future".
