GEELONG is hopeful Aaron Black has avoided serious damage to his left knee after the defender suffered a nasty hyperextension in the win over North Melbourne on Saturday.

Black, who crossed to the Cats last season, was carried off by two trainers after landing awkwardly following a marking contest early in the third quarter at GMHBA Stadium.

The former Roo, playing his third AFL game this season and just his seventh for the Cats, seemed to hyperextend his left knee when he landed stiff-legged after the marking attempt.

Black was checked in the dressing rooms before returning to the bench with ice on his knee where he watched the remainder of thematch.

Coach Chris Scott said the defender will be sent for scans, but is hopeful it's not the dreaded ACL.

"It (Black's incident) looked like a hyperextension, the more complicated part is what's damaged. It was sore enough not to come back on," Scott said.

"The indication we're getting that it's not a serious injury, but that's our best guess at the moment."
