ESSENDON midfielder David Myers says being forced to sit out last season as part of the Bombers' supplement saga was a blessing in disguise.

Shoulder and back injuries restricted the 27-year-old to just two games in 2015.

Myers was sidelined for four months after last year's season opener with Sydney before copping a knee to the back in his return game against Adelaide in round 20.

Having avoided watching much football while serving a 12-month anti-doping suspension, Myers said the break was just what he needed.

"I probably did need the year just to have a chop out from everything and be able to freshen up and reset and come back," Myers told essendonfc.com.au.

"Last year, before the ban, mentally I was pretty fatigued.

"Then to have the year I had with injury was pretty frustrating as well.

"It's nice to be excited about footy again, so it's a good feeling."

Myers has played only 85 games for the Bombers since being selected with the sixth overall selection of the 2007 NAB AFL Draft.

He played 45 games in his first five seasons at the club before becoming a regular in the side in 2013.

The big-bodied onballer averaged 20.9 possessions and 4.2 tackles and playing in 20 of the club's 22 games in his most productive season.

He followed that up with 18 appearances in 2014.

Myers knows places in the Bombers' midfield are up for grabs after the emergence of talented youngsters Zach Merrett, Kyle Langford and Darcy Parish.

"If you look at all of them, they're better than they were when we left," Myers said.

"It's no surprise really, they're cracking kids and put a great deal of time into their game, so it's no wonder to me that they're all stepping up.

"You're going to fight a bit harder for your spot this year, so it'll be good."
