GOLD Coast young gun Mac Andrew has been charged with drink driving and will face court and a club-imposed sanction in January.

The Suns confirmed Andrew, the No.5 draft pick in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft, had failed a roadside blood alcohol test in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Gold Coast said the 19-year-old cooperated fully with Queensland Police then was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and released.

He will be required to meet with Gold Coast club management and members of the leadership group when he returns to training on January 9 to receive a club-imposed sanction.

"Mac has made a poor decision and understands that he has let a number of people down, as well as the club and the wider Gold Coast community," Suns football boss Wayne Campbell said in a statement.

"He understands the severity of his actions and has shown remorse and as a club we will now look to support Mac and help him through the situation."

The talented key defender debuted in round 20 against West Coast and played the final four games of last season.

He signed a two-year contract extension in April that ties him to the Suns until the end of the 2025 season.
