INJURY-prone Melbourne midfielder Jack Trengove has declared his season over to take a conservative approach to his foot problem in the hope of enjoying a full pre-season ahead of 2016.
Trengove in entering his sixth year in the AFL for 81 games, but hasn't played since scans revealed a crack in his navicular bone in his left foot in April last year.
The 23-year-old told Melbourne radio station Triple M there was the chance he could have returned for the final few games of the season, but by pushing that hard he risked further injury.
"I saw the surgeon a few weeks ago now and I think it's the end of this season for me," Trengove said.
"We've got time on our side to just get it right and get it as strong as possible.
"Looking to get everything fit and healthy for the start of next pre-season.
"In the whole scheme of things it's not really worth it rushing it and potentially hampering things for the future."
Understandably sick of rehabilitation, Trengove said he had become a handy swimmer due to the time he's spent in the pool after his constant setbacks.
But while his frustration continues he was thrilled his side was entering the second game of the season as winners for the first time in a decade.
The Demons have included key forward Chris Dawes and midfielder Bernie Vince for Saturday's clash against Greater Western Sydney.
"I've never had this feeling leading into round two, it is great but at the same time we want to become a really good, consistent footy side that comes up with that stuff every week," he said.
"Hopefully we can get it done this weekend."
