Box Hill Hawks completed the pre-season double against last season’s rebel VFLW grand finalists to prove they will be around the mark again in their rebadged guise.
The Hawks held off a typical late charge from reigning premier Essendon by 11 points at NEC Hangar on Saturday.
The Hawks controlled the contest through the middle two quarters, turning a one-point deficit at quarter-time into a 17-point break by the last change, before the Bombers kicked the first two goals of the last to pull back within a kick.
But while the reigning premiers were able to scrape by Casey Demons last week, they couldn’t repeat the dose, with best-on-ground Maddie Boyd (four goals) and Amanda Tessari answering to give the Hawks the win.

Casey Demons bounced back from their loss to the Bombers last week to kick three last-quarter goals to one and defeated Southern Saints by eight points at Casey Fields.
Elsewhere, Carlton’s bid for a first finals appearance looks in solid shape after a convincing 20-point win over Collingwood at IKON Park, an accurate Geelong accounted for the Bulldogs by the same margin at Deakin University and Williamstown’s impressive pre-season continued with a comfortable 34-point defeat of Port Melbourne on Friday night.
There is just one match scheduled for this weekend, with state league footy returning to Braybrook’s Skinner Reserve for a VFLW/VFL double header on Saturday.
Western Bulldogs face Williamstown in the VFLW at 10.30am before Footscray is at home to Casey Demons at 2.30pm.
Selected squads will be released the evening before each match, or on the Friday in the case of Sunday games, and entry is open and free for all fixtures.
