HAWTHORN debutant Beau Muston has admitted he had doubts he would ever play senior football. But he says the club’s faith in him made him persist.

Muston gathered 31 possessions in his debut match which came after three knee reconstructions.

Speaking to HawksTV after the match, Muston said Hawthorn’s belief in him built his own self-belief.

“When I did it last time in the NAB Cup against Adelaide I didn’t know what to do. I was still contracted and while I was still contracted I was always going to do my best to get back,” Muston said.

“The club showed faith in me and it’s all worth it today.”

Muston has had some dark days since he was drafted by the Hawks in 2005 but says his dream of playing at AFL level never disappeared.

“I always thought I was good enough. I just wanted to get out there,” he said.

“The club showed faith in me so I just wanted to keep going and do my best. It’s all paying off now and I’m absolutely stoked.”

Muston had a big contingent of well-wishers from his home town Shepparton, who made the trip to the MCG for his big day.

“Mum, dad, my brother and his wife, my little niece and my girlfriend is here. Everyone is here and heaps of the boys came back from Shepp. It was great.”

The 22-year-old admits it was hard to contain himself during the week after hearing the news he had waited to hear for years.

“I found out the news on Thursday so I had a bit of time until Sunday arvo. The first few days I was jumping out of my skin. I started to settle down a bit. I was ready to perform today and I think I gave it my best crack.”
