THE AFL has asked Etihad Stadium to conduct tests on the patch of artificial turf that Geelong forward Daniel Menzel believes contributed to his ankle injury.

Menzel underwent scans on Tuesday that confirmed he had suffered a ligament sprain when he slid on the synthetic turf around the Etihad Stadium boundary in Saturday night's clash against North Melbourne.

The Cats said the 24-year-old would undergo a fitness test later this week to push his claims for selection in Saturday night's blockbuster against the Western Bulldogs.

Menzel believes the artificial turf at Etihad Stadium contributed to his injury and relayed his concerns through a Geelong staff member to the AFL's football operations department on Tuesday.

Evans said it was difficult to determine if Menzel's injury would have occurred on normal turf, but the League would investigate this week.

"I've asked them (Etihad Stadium) to run some tests in that region to check that we are consistent in that area as well as around the other parts of the ground," Evans told 3AW on Tuesday night.

"My understanding is Dan Menzel thinks it contributed.

"We don't like any injury and we don't want to be dismissive of any injury, and we should always investigate thoroughly where that's needed.

"We'll run as many tests as we can and see if there's something we can learn from that."

Brisbane Lions forward Michael Close suffered a season-ending knee injury on the stadium's artificial turf near the interchange bench last season.

An AFL investigation into that incident dismissed concerns that the turf had contributed to Close's injury.

Close, who has returned from injury in the NEAFL, is reportedly still seeking compensation from an AFL insurer following his injury.
