THE AFL umpiring department has given the debut performance of trailblazer Eleni Glouftsis the tick of approval, with the South Australian to adjudicate her second game this weekend.
Glouftsis made history on Sunday at Etihad Stadium when she became the first female field umpire to officiate an AFL home and away game.
The 25-year-old drew some criticism on social media during the Essendon-West Coast game following a couple of sub-par centre bounces due to a recently relaid strip of turf in the centre of the ground.
But head AFL umpires coach Hayden Kennedy told AFL.com.au he had full confidence in Glouftsis' bouncing ability, and confirmed she would back up her debut with another game in round 10.
"It was clear that with the resurfacing of the centre area in the previous week, it made bouncing much harder on the weekend," Kennedy said.
"Eleni struggled with the height of the bounce, but she wasn't the only one. If [the bounce] wasn't straight, it would favour one ruckman too much and would result in a recall.
"We had a chat about it at half-time and decided that a throw up would be the best outcome for the game."
Kennedy said Glouftsis was "normally a very good bouncer", and admitted the recalls had dented her confidence at the main break.
The umpiring department has yet to decide which game Glouftsis will adjudicate in Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round.
