THERE have been 2,354 home and away matches since the start of 2004 when the AFL Coaches Association introduced its player of the year award. 

There have been games in which the two coaches casting their votes have been in complete agreement, and matches where they differ slightly. 

However, never in the award’s history can the AFLCA recall two coaches having such a different view on a match than in Saturday night's clash between Adelaide and Collingwood. 

Nathan Buckley and Don Pyke did not concur on a single player in their respective top five on the ground.

The AFLCA has been collating the coaches' votes since the award started in 2004 and can't recall a game in which 10 players have received votes.

There have been a number of games in which the coaches have only had common ground with one player.

The only thing Pyke and Buckley agreed upon was that the best three players on the ground were Crows.

Adelaide's win over the Magpies was divisive for media observers as well, with AFL Media, Adelaide Advertiser, The Age and 3AW all nominating different players as best afield.

All of those media outlets had at least one player in their votes who didn't feature in the coaches' votes.

After Dustin Martin failed to receive a single vote from the ABC's Mark Maclure after a best on ground performance against Essendon, it just underlines there are many ways to view a game of football.
