ESSENDON midfielder Kyle Reimers will not be risked in competition this pre-season as the 22-year-old endures thigh problems.

Reimers joins defender Tayte Pears as Bombers who will watch the entire NAB Cup/Challenge competition from the sidelines as he battles a thigh injury.

The club says he has been working diligently alongside Pears - who has a foot injury - in his rehabilitation and within a modified training regime.

"Both Tayte and Kyle are unlikely to play throughout the NAB Cup series and with Kyle's recent thigh concern, we are treating this carefully because of his history with thigh problems," general manager of football operations Paul Hamilton told essendonfc.com.au on Tuesday.

"We have again been fairly conservative in the management of Kyle's light quad strain but he has certainly been impressive in the way he goes about his recovery."

In better news for the club, forward Leroy Jetta is set to appear in the Bombers' first NAB Cup assignment on Friday night despite cutting his leg in the club's intra-club last week.

"Leroy has had a great pre-season and when he left the ground early at the intra-club, we were concerned, but thankfully his scare has just proved to be a split in his shin and he will be available for Friday night," Hamilton said.

The Bombers' second selection in last year's NAB AFL Draft, Ariel Steinberg, has also dodged a bullet with the jarred knee he received in the same hit-out proving to be a relatively minor complaint.

"Ariel was the only real injury concern but as it turns out it's a grade one medial ligament, so what that means is he is likely to miss between two to three weeks but he should be back into full training within the month," Hamilton said.

"While Ariel has been training really well and he was clearly disappointed, being a first year boy, we are really pleased with where he is at."

Ruckman David Hille, who had knee surgery late last year, could yet make an appearance late in the pre-season competition.

"We would hope if David continues to progress as well as he has, he should be available in the last week or two," Hamilton said.

"We are considerate that a lot of things have to fall into place by then but we are confident that could happen and that he could possibly make a return."

The Bombers will take on St Kilda and the Brisbane Lions in the fourth round-robin of the NAB Cup on Friday night at Etihad Stadium.
