All AFL clubs were required to submit final club lists to the AFL today by 2pm, in preparation for the 2012 NAB AFL Draft, to be held next week on Thursday November 22 on the Gold Coast.

The selection order for the 2012 Draft has been confirmed after the list lodgement today and is attached below. A further 13 players were removed from clubs lists with two players also added, as follows:

Removed from lists:

Adelaide Crows – Nicholas Joyce (delisted)

Changes to club lists today means there will be a total of 107 selections at this year’s draft, comprising 79 live picks to be taken on the night, three Father-Son Selections (Joe Daniher, Essendon; Jack Viney, Melbourne and Lachlan Hunter, Western Bulldogs), 24 promoted rookies and one Queensland local talent selection.

AFL General Manager Football Operations Adrian Anderson said the AFL had been encouraged with the first-time operation of the new Free Agency Period, in concert with the club Exchange Period.

“The Free Agency Rules were introduced for 2012, after a detailed negotiation over several years with the Players’ Association, with the aim of providing players with long-term service at a club the ability to determine the next step in their careers, in recognition of their service, while also enabling our clubs to consider all the list options available to them for their long-term planning” Mr Anderson said.

“The Free Agency period, leading in the Trade period, was extended this year to give both clubs and players the maximum opportunity in the first year of operation to assess their options.”

Mr Anderson said a total of 41 players had moved clubs through either the free agency, trade rules or expansion club list establishment rules, compared to 28 (2011), 21 (2010) and 23 (2009) players respectively in the three previous seasons.

“We will review with the AFLPA and the clubs the first year of operation of Free Agency, including the length of the Trade and Free Agency Period, to see if it is appropriate, but clubs and players were able to make considered decisions around their lists, or their career paths,” he said.

Free Agency would need to be considered over some years, Mr Anderson said, to assess its full impact on the competition, but the first year of operation had seen both players moving to clubs higher-ranked on the ladder, in search of potential finals opportunities, as well as players moving to clubs lower-ranked on the ladder, in search of greater on-field opportunities.

“At all times, clubs continue to be subject to the TPP limits that apply across the competition, and ensure that talent must be spread across all teams,” he said.
