While not wishing to elaborate on just who they might chase, coach Guy McKenna said if the Suns could complement their emerging list with an established star, they would.
He did not rule out chasing Hawthorn's out-of-contract full forward Lance Franklin, but said it was just as likely Gold Coast would pursue a midfielder or key defender.
McKenna's comments follow those of Suns list manager Scott Clayton on Channel Seven last Saturday night, who also said they would not telegraph a list strategy.
Clayton and McKenna, along with other Suns officials, will meet in Melbourne on Monday during the club's bye week.
"We just have to wait for the season to settle and work out where our needs are," McKenna said.
"We'll be actively seeking and I think we've got the (salary cap) availability to do that.
"It could be a midfielder we go after. I thought Collingwood did it really well when they got Luke Ball to help Sharrod Wellingham and a few other mids, not to absorb that heat.
"It will be very calculated. We're vey happy with the list we've got and we've seen it develop this season.
"We're comfortable and if we've got a spot there and we think we can fast-track that development and there's a particular player out there that can do that, we'll chase that person for sure."
McKenna said there would be a limit on what the Suns would be willing to spend, but they do have salary cap flexibility if they head down that path.
"We'll talk about our list, we'll talk about who's available and at the end of the season we'll start getting busy," he said.
The Suns completed their final training session at Metricon Stadium on Friday morning before flying to Melbourne to take on Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
Following a rousing 15-point win over North Melbourne last weekend, McKenna said his team was now out to prove they could win on the road.
"We've got another big test against a side that sits 8-3. We play at Etihad where we haven't won before. We've passed a few milestones this year and this is another big examination and we want to pass the test," he said.
"If you want to be a serious contender like Essendon and Hawthorn and Geelong have shown, they travel and they beat good sides.
"We have to get some runs on the board to gain some respect and credibility in the competition.
"We want to show the AFL community we're growing and we're not going to falter under the pressure of Essendon."
