THE AFL has reminded Geelong and Hawthorn players that they face harsher penalties if they get reported in this year's grand final.

The league released a statement on Thursday reiterating that double base points would be applied by the match review panel for indiscretions in the biggest game of the season.

The decision to enforce harsher penalties came largely on the back of the violent 2004 clash between Port Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions.

A total of 15 players were reported in that match, with retiring Lion Alastair Lynch suspended for 10 matches following three separate incidents.

Lynch was suspended for three and four matches respectively for striking Port Adelaide's Darryl Wakelin and another three for attempting to strike the Power defender.

Jonathan Brown was also rubbed out for five matches for striking Port Adelaide's Josh Carr while Brownlow Medallist Simon Black received a three-match ban for two separate striking offences.

Another 12 players were fined.
