UPDATE: Due to the Grand Final replay on Saturday, October 2, the NSW Australian Football History Society has rescheduled 'Australian Football in the 70s' to Friday, October 1 at 7pm. Attendees are encouraged to enjoy a meal at Club Swans prior to or after the formalities.
Australian footballers from the 70s will gather at Club Swans on Friday, October 1 to relive the memories and catch up with old friends when the NSW Australian Football History Society presents ‘Sydney’s Sensational Seventies’.
The inaugural event was held in 2005 with people gathering to hear about Ralph Robertson who was a prominent footballer in Sydney in the early 1900s.
Since then, the event has continued to grow with this year’s event to act as a reunion for players of the 1970s explained former Easts player Bob Wilton who will be the keynote speaker on the day.
“There are many followers of AFL in Sydney that go back to this era who may never get another opportunity to catch up with old colleagues, competitors and umpires. I think that is what will make this a special occasion,” Wilton said.
Ian Granland, one of the key organisers behind the event, said that the proceeds from the day will go towards establishing a website which will allow people to catch up on all the events and news of football in Sydney right back to the 1800s.
