AFTER 160 games, Brisbane Lions utility Brent Staker has retired.

The versatile 31-year-old spent seven seasons with West Coast and the past six with the Lions, but ultimately injuries got the better of him.

Staker announced his retirement to the Lions' playing group on Wednesday.

After an excellent first season in Brisbane in 2011, he endured two knee reconstructions and a litany of injury problems that restricted him to just 28 games over his final five seasons.

"I felt to get 160 games in 13 years was more than I'd ever get out of myself, considering the last six years has been a real challenge," Staker said in his announcement to the playing group.

"I wouldn't change it for the world."

Staker was also quick to laugh at the most famous incident of his career, when former Sydney Swan Barry Hall punched him while playing for the Eagles.

Hall was suspended for seven games for the punch.

"Quick thank-yous, the first one without any hesitation is to Barry Hall," Staker laughed.

"Bazza's reassured me I've got a very strong right jaw, it's still intact. I appreciate it Barry for putting me on the map."

Staker was drafted by the Eagles with pick No.37 in the 2002 NAB AFL Draft and forged a successful career with the club, although he missed out on playing in its 2006 premiership.

He was traded at the end of 2009 to the Lions along with a third-round draft pick for Bradd Dalziell.
