The West Coast Eagles are delighted to announce that it has appointed its first ever female board member, Deputy Leader of the Federal Opposition, the Honourable Julie Bishop.

Club chairman Mark Barnaba recently approached Ms Bishop, a strong supporter of the club since its inception, in the hope of securing her as a director and was ecstatic when she accepted.

“Julie is an outstanding Australian, an outstanding West Australian and a long-standing passionate supporter of the West Coast Eagles,” Mr Barnaba said.

“She will bring much to the board and the club and we are very excited and pleased about her appointment.

“This appointment again demonstrates that our club is in good shape and that the future prospects are very exciting.”

West Australian Football Commission Chairman Neale Fong reiterated the club view that the appointment of Ms Bishop was exciting for the football industry in WA.

“We are excited that Julie Bishop has been appointed to the board,” Mr Fong said. “It reflects well on the status of West Australian football.

“We are confident that an appointment of this nature will assist the West Coast Eagles to remain a force in the AFL.”

Julie Bishop said she is looking forward to being involved with the club as it embarks on a positive new phase in its development.

“The West Coast Eagles is one of the strongest clubs in the AFL and, as a long time supporter and the club’s local Federal member of parliament, I am delighted to accept the offer of a position on the board,” Ms Bishop said.

“There is an impressive range of business, management and sporting administration skills on the current board and I look forward to making a contribution in helping the club return to its rightful place at the top of the ladder.”
