DYNAMIC St Kilda forward Darren Minchington will miss two months of football after undergoing surgery on an ankle injury he suffered in the VFL last Saturday.

Minchington, 23, was strapped up and managed to play out the game as Sandringham suffered an upset 25-point loss to Coburg at Trevor Barker Oval.

Football manager Jamie Cox expected the young forward would miss about eight weeks post-surgery on his ankle ligaments.

"Unfortunately Darren hurt his ankle while playing for Sandringham last weekend," Cox said.

"Subsequent scans have shown he needs surgery to correct the issue but we're hopeful he can get back before the end of the season and still have an impact this year."

Minchington is contracted until the end of 2018.

Rookie defender Nick Coughlan will miss up to a month after suffering a hamstring strain, also in the VFL.

"Nick Coughlan also unfortunately strained a hamstring. It looks like a pretty traditionally hammy. He'll miss three-to-four weeks," Cox said.

Cox confirmed forward Paddy McCartin would be unavailable this week after being concussed against Coburg, but the club hopes he'll be available for round 16.

The 21-year-old has been concussed six times since 2014.

"He just hasn't quite recovered in time. We're hopeful that Paddy will be available for next week. He'll be tested early next week," Cox said.

Meanwhile, tough midfielder David Armitage is listed as being four weeks away from a groin injury.

"Dave's started running and is training well. (He's) probably still four weeks away from returning to footy but it's encouraging to see him running laps of the oval here at Seaford," Cox said.

Draftee Ed Phillips will play VFL this weekend after overcoming an ankle concern while Nathan Wright should be back in selection contention after recovering from an AC joint injury in his shoulder, assuming he gets through Thursday's main training session.
