CARLTON'S long-awaited administration and training facility at its Visy Park headquarters was officially opened amid much fanfare on Wednesday evening.

The $19.5 million structure was unveiled by Victorian sports minister James Merlino and Melbourne lord mayor Robert Doyle before 300 guests.

Work on the state-of-the-art facility began in 2008 with its recent completion providing a significant boost to the Blues ahead of the 2010 season.

"This is one of the most significant occasions in our long and proud history," club president Stephen Kernahan said at the launch.

"It is a very exciting time for everyone at Carlton, in particular for the players who will benefit from the outstanding facilities now at their disposal.

"These new facilities will benefit everyone; players, coaches, administrators, members, supporters and the community. Importantly, Visy Park will also benefit the environment."

Features of the facility include rehabilitation pools, a lecture theatre, a clinical medical area, a gym and a warm-up area - all under the same roof as club officials.

Coach Brett Ratten recently said the new headquarters would finally allow him and his squad to compete on an even playing field with clubs that have had access to similar facilities for some time.

Funds for the new building were provided by the state and federal governments, the Melbourne City Council, the AFL and the club.

Former president and benefactor Richard Pratt has been honoured, with a mural carrying his name to be hung in the boardroom.

Its partnership with Visy and commitment to the environment will see Carlton host approximately 6000 local students every year to study the building's use of rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation, light sensors, thermally efficient cladding and solar hot water.

The club's merchandise shop and café have also been incorporated in the design with the café, ironically enough, to be run by former Bomber Jason Johnson's catering company.
