North Melbourne finished the 1975 season in third place, with Hawthorn on top of the table.

The Kangaroos upset Carlton in their first final, a tight tussle resulting in a 20 point win to North Melbourne. The Kangaroos ironically played Hawthorn in their semi final, the Hawks advancing straight to the Grand Final with an 11 point win. But North Melbourne fought back strongly in their Preliminary Final, saluting by 17 points over Richmond.

North Melbourne would get their chance for revenge against Hawthorn in the Grand Final, as 110,000 fans packed the MCG on that one day in September.
