In a sign of how wholeheartedly the Cats and their skipper are embracing the phenomenon that is social media, the poll to decide Selwood's call will be conducted via Twitter, using the hashtag #YourCall.
The initiative has the full support of the club's football department, and it is believed to be the first time that a professional sporting team has used Twitter in this way anywhere in the world.
"It's huge, and I think we'll see more of it in coming years," Selwood said.
"I'm really open to it. If we get to interact with the fans a little bit more and get them to have a little bit of a say, then this is the way we can do it."
It is always the away captain who gets to call at the coin toss, so the Cats can only hold the poll in the lead-up to away matches.
"It would be great if you could do it at your home ground where you could have the scoreboard going," Selwood said.
"The fans would love it."
Selwood has cultivated a big following on Twitter. He has 47,430 followers, which is 22,000 more than the Geelong footy club itself.
When it comes to calling at the coin toss, the 24-year-old says he has previously gone for heads more than tails.
But he will now have to put his old habits aside and rely on the Cats fans to decide.
And Selwood is putting the heat on them to get the call right on Easter Monday.
"It would be nice to kick with the wind in round one against the Hawks," he said with a chuckle.
"But it's just a way that we can talk back and give a little bit back to our fans.
"We just hope the Geelong fans get involved and we'll see how it goes."
Geelong's digital and social media manager Tom Peeters came across the idea during an off-season fact-finding mission to the United States.
The media team at the NFL's New York Giants had tried to implement a similar initiative, only to be blocked by the club's football department.
