The fear is Gardiner's season could be over after his horror injury against the Bombers. Although it would leave a hole in the defence, it would also give Chris Fagan a chance to assess another player or two on his list. Beams is still a couple of weeks away from returning. - Michael Whiting

Early prognosis

The Blues will be without Curnow for up to a month after the midfielder consulted a specialist. He suffered significant bruising to his larynx during the round 14 game against Richmond and missed last Saturday’s match against Adelaide. In better news, Lamb is expected to be available this weekend after missing last Saturday’s game with concussion. Silvagni and Williamson are back in full training and should be available for selection in round 17. - Howard Kotton

Defender Brown could have earned a recall to the senior team this week but his season could be over after suffering another ankle injury in the dying moments of the VFL clash last weekend. The former Cat is set to miss at least six weeks with the concern. McNiece is still recovering from a neck injury he suffered at training in recent weeks and the club is handling it in a cautious manner, while Ambrose's quad complaint will see him miss at least another two weeks. - Callum Twomey

Early prognosis

The Cats have more than half a dozen players facing tests after their injury list blew out last week. Most will be available however, and with Brandan Parfitt successfully returning via the VFL the Cats should have a stronger squad to face the Brisbane Lions. Giving a few of their senior players a rest remains an option too, given they sit in third spot. - Peter Ryan
