Wines’ AFL debut was a memorable one. He was one of Port Adelaide’s best in the 79-point win over Melbourne on Sunday at the MCG.
The 18-year-old midfielder finished the game with 24 possessions, 16 of which were contested. He took seven marks and kicked a goal.
He had also had three clearances and three score assists.
Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley said Wines had shown great form leading into round one.
"Ollie's nomination is a great reward for the effort he has put in over the whole pre-season since arriving at Alberton after the draft,” Hinkley said.
"He moved over from Victoria, applied himself magnificently and displayed professionalism and maturity across every training session.
"Ollie immediately won the respect of his teammates with the way he applied himself and I know they'll all be delighted for him as well.
"He put in a really strong performance on the weekend and, as he has done across the NAB Cup, continued to play his role for the team.
"The football public got to see his great strength in winning contested football and his effort of sixteen contested possessions was outstanding, especially for a young player on debut."
Wines was Port Adelaide’s first selection in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft (selection seven overall).
He was recruited from the Echuca Football Club and the Bendigo Pioneers. He averaged 24 possessions for Vic Country during the 2012 under-18 championships.
Wines was named an Under-18 All-Australian in 2012 and is an AIS-AFL Academy graduate.
