AFTER missing the club's first two wins because of suspension earlier this season, Gold Coast's Campbell Brown said Saturday's victory over Richmond was extra sweet for him.

It was the first time the former Hawthorn defender could belt out the club song.

Brown missed the round five and seven wins over Port Adelaide and Brisbane Lions after being suspended for four matches against the Western Bulldogs in round three.

"Wins this year we always knew were going to be difficult, so to miss the first two, pretty historic occasions as well, and not be out there with the young guys was disappointing," he said.

"I didn't know when the next one was going to come, I was hoping it'd be sooner, but it was a great result against Richmond.

"We fought pretty hard to get back in the game after that first quarter (deficit of 36 points), and it was a fantastic result for everyone."

And did Brown know the words to the Suns' song?

"It's been playing on the loud speakers at Metricon a lot, so I've just been trying to memorise it. I got through the song all right," he said.

The 15-point victory snapped an eight-match losing streak and came after a poor showing the previous week against the Sydney Swans.

Brown said the third quarter - where the Suns held Richmond to just 2.7 with a howling breeze at the Tigers' backs - was pivotal.

"We were playing pretty ugly football to watch but we knew it'd be pretty effective so when we went in 13 points down at three quarter time, we knew we were probably in the box seat," he said.

The Suns' third victory moved them off the bottom of the table, but they now face a daunting stretch of matches starting with Collingwood at home on Saturday night.

"I reckon it's a great opportunity for us," Brown said. "You can only tell how much we've improved from playing the best.

"Obviously Collingwood are by far the benchmark in the competition. I'm taking the view that it's exciting for us and it'll be a great test for everyone, especially the young guys to come up against guys like Dane Swan and (Scott) Pendlebury. If we want to become the best, we've got to learn from the best."
