All the teams for Round 16 of the Smithy’s VFL.

Southport’s hopes of saving its flagging season have received a massive quintuple boost as almost a quarter of its best team returns to action in its must-win Smithy’s VFL contest with an out-of-form Williamstown at DSV Stadium on Saturday.

Goalkicking midfielder Zac Foot hasn’t played since hurting in back in Round 4, while small forward Max Pescud has been missing with a broken collarbone since Round 2, with their returns seriously adding to the Sharks’ scoring power.

Midfielder Jay Lockhart (hand) is also back after missing five weeks and defenders Matt McGuinness (six weeks) and Jacob Heron (five) have been out for more than a month with hamstring injuries.

The returns are a huge fillip for a team that is battling in 13th spot at 6-7, a game outside the top 10 with five games to go.

The news isn’t as good for the Seagulls, with injury-plagued midfielder James Cousins breaking down again, this time being ruled out for eight weeks with an ankle injury suffered early in his 50th game last week – which was also his return match from his second hamstring strain of the year.

Sandringham is also looking stronger as St Kilda’s injury list shrinks, with Hunter Clark returning through the VFL after a six-week knee injury, while Jack Hayes (hamstring) and Gus McLennan (back) will play their first games at any level this year.

The Zebras have also named Isaac Keeler, Tom Campbell, Ryan Byrnes, Jack Peris and debutant Will Vesely to face Casey Demons at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday, with Zak Jones, Jack Billings and Zak Jones called up by St Kilda, Leo Connolly rested and Dan McKenzie injuring his calf.

In what is Demon great and former Sandy youngster Jimmy Munro’s 150th VFL game, his team has named Adam Tomlinson, Kade Chandler, James Harmes and Joel Smith, but they will be without the promoted James Jordon and Taj Woewodin, plus key defender Dan Turner, ruckman Jack Bell and the gutsy George Grey to injury.

Frankston has landed a huge mid-season recruit with former St Kilda and Carlton mid-forward Jack Newnes to play his first game for the club in its daunting trip to face a rebounding Gold Coast at Heritage Bank Stadium on Saturday.

Newnes, 30, retired from the AFL last year and joined Northern league club Greensborough, but only played one match before stepping away, and his signing will add experience, class and poise to the Dolphins’ midfield.

They also regain midfield gun Trent Mynott and defenders Joe Lloyd and Tom Small for the trip north, with Seb Quirk (groin) being the only forced omission, while the Suns have selected the mercurial Malcolm Rosas after he missed AFL selection.

Brisbane Lions star Daniel Rich is slated to play at State league level for the first time since 2011 after being named to line up against Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval on Saturday.

Rich played two NEAFL games 12 years ago but has been an AFL staple ever since until dropping himself a couple of weeks ago, and he has been named to play VFL alongside returning captain Wylie Buzza, ruckman Darcy Fort and Nakia Cockatoo.

Jarryd Lyons and James Madden are in the AFL team, while Noah Answerth and Darcy Gardiner are injured and Brad McDonald has been picked by the Allies in the national championships.

The Bullants also have a debutant, with Sunbury’s Jack Newitt earning his first game alongside John Roumeliotis, Nathan Honey and Zach Morris, but ruck Liam Kolar has a sore knee.

Port Melbourne has lost prime mover Josh Green possibly for the rest of the season after scans revealed more damage to his dislocated thumb, while ruck Felix Flockart is unavailable, with Tom Hofert, Jesse Cucinotta and Kyle Borg coming in.

The Borough hosts a Werribee team chasing a 10th straight win with full forward Hudson Garoni and 2019 Morrish medallist Lucas Rocci included but Josh Porter succumbing to an adductor injury.

Box Hill Hawks have gone tall for their trip to Sydney to play GWS, with rucks Lloyd Meek and Max Ramsden and key position swingman Emerson Jeka all named along with goalkicker Sam Butler, replacing the promoted Denver Grainger-Barras, while Changkuoth Jiath pulled up sore from his comeback game last week and Jaylon Thorpe is also injured.

The Giants have named Ryan Angwin and Josh Fahey to strengthen a team that was belted by Casey Demons last week.

Carlton has Ed Curnow, George Hewett and its No.11 draft pick Ollie Hollands among the inclusions for its trip down Sydney Rd to meet Coburg, with Paddy Dow concussed and Patrick Dozzi gone for most of the year with a serious hamstring.

The Lions have surprisingly dropped full back Harry Nolan and ruckman Will Bella among four changes as coach Jamie Cassidy-McNamara again shows he isn’t afraid to make big calls at selection, with Liam Podhajski and Josh Kemp among those to win a recall.

Geelong has a debutant for its clash with a stocked up North Melbourne team at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday night, with Wangaratta’s Hunter Gottschling earning his first game and Marcus Herbert, Tom Panuccio and Jack Evans returning to replace the promoted Oisin Mullin and injured pair Osca Riccardi and Tom Feely.

The Kangaroos have named Todd Goldstein, Will Phillips, Miles Bergman and Aiden Bonar plus former Hawk Connor Downie as they chase six wins in a row, but they replace five keys in the other direction, with Hugh Greenwood, Tristan Xerri, Lachie Young, Flynn Perez and son-of-a-legend Cooper Harvey all playing AFL.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.
