WESTERN Bulldogs veteran Scott West is on track to make his long-awaited return to football this weekend at VFL level.

After overcoming an ongoing knee problem, West will play his first game since round six on Saturday for the club's VFL affiliate Williamstown against the Bendigo Bombers at Burbank Oval.

"It's been a long road for him and all is on track for him to play, which is great for him," assistant coach Leon Cameron said at Whitten Oval.

"He's got to train tomorrow and make sure he's okay and ticks all the boxes and away he goes on Saturday."

West, 33, was not present at the Dogs' mid-week training session as his wife Leshelle is expected to deliver their fourth son on Wednesday.

In other selection news, ruckman Ben Hudson is expected to return to the senior side after being a late withdrawal from the side which lost to North Melbourne with back tightness, while Cameron Wight will miss one to two weeks after breaking his jaw in the VFL.

"[Hudson] had a really bad back last weekend and it played up all week [before Sunday's game]," Cameron said.

"He got through training today so we'll see how he pulls up. We'll train again a bit tomorrow and then in Brisbane on Friday, but he should be okay.

"It's disappointing because it's another tall defender [in Wight] that we didn't need to go down. He's broken his jaw, but it's up near the top so it's only a week or two. If it had have been down the bottom, he might have been in bit of strife for the rest of the year."

Cameron also said Josh Hill and Andrejs Everitt are chances to receive recalls this weekend, while Shaun Higgins requires a "few more weeks" at VFL level before pushing for senior selection.

The Bulldogs were put through a physical session on Wednesday with the players showing plenty of enthusiasm in the fiery hit-out.

Cameron said it was pleasing to see the players boost their level of intensity after such a lacklustre showing against North Melbourne on Sunday.

"We've planned in probably the last three weeks to just try and pick up the defensive side of things and the physicality, so it's been ongoing," he said.

"It was a good session.

"From the weekend, the first 25 minutes of the game were just not acceptable, and that was fantastic from the Kangaroos because they're known for that and they served it right up to it.

"We weren't good enough to hit back when we should have been, and it took us until about half way through the second quarter to realise that, which was probably the disappointing part.

"We've got to continue on it. We've got some light-framed bodies, but we've really addressed that hardness issue and that was the real disappointing part on the weekend."
