JACK Viney concedes he would be playing with discomfort in his injured foot, but the Melbourne co-captain is confident of making his return against Port Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday.
But small forward Jeff Garlett is in doubt for the clash against the Power, having travelled to Perth for family reasons.
Viney has not played since having surgery on the plantar fascia in his foot following the round 15 clash against Sydney.
The tough midfielder said he still needed to pass a few tests at Thursday's main training session to confirm his availability for the match against the Power.
"The foot's going well. I've got a few fitness tests to go but all going well I'm confident I'll be able to pass them and we'll make a decision after Thursday," Viney said.
"I'm pretty confident but I'm an optimistic person and the physios are a little more conservative.
"It's a balance. I've told them to throw things at me and if I can't pass the test then it's a no-go.
"Up until now I've been able to do everything that I've needed to do to play this weekend, so hopefully it continues."
Viney said he would do everything he could to play, but wouldn't open himself up to any long-term damage if the doctors thought there was an obvious risk there.
"I probably won't be pain free, it's just the discomfort type of thing," Viney said.
"If I'm able to manage that then I'm good to go."
Melbourne launched its Reconciliation Action Plan on Wednesday, with past indigenous players Aaron Davey, Shannon Motlop, Austin Wonaeamirri and Liam Jurrah in attendance.
